Mark Smith

DACVS-SA (Board-Certified Specialist, Small Animal Surgery)

Dr Smith completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Guelph in 1989 and graduated as a veterinarian from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 1992.  He completed a 1 year Rotating Internship in small animal medicine & surgery at OVC in 1996 and a 1 year surgery internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Florida in 2000. He spent 6 years in small animal general practice and understands full-well the daily challenges facing our referring veterinarians.

He then completed a 3 year surgery residency and Masters of Veterinary Science (MVSc) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon from 2000-2003, earning the specialist degree, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Small Animal. Dr Smith is a member of the Veterinary Orthopaedic Society.

In the ensuing 20 years, he has worked in large referral hospital environments while also operating a mobile surgical service in referring veterinarians’ hospitals. He enjoys all aspects of surgery, particularly in the areas of orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, laparoscopy, arthroscopy and soft tissue reconstructive surgery.  He continues to find this work very stimulating and rewarding, as it is a genuine pleasure to see patients return to full activity, doing dog and cat “stuff”!

Outside of work, Dr Smith can be found enjoying life with his partner Bing Bing, and children, Gillian and Evelyn. His daughters enjoy horseback riding and all creatures great and small.  Dr Smith enjoys revisiting the world through the eyes of his children and strives to constantly evolve the family lifestyle in these times of increasing awareness of animal welfare, environmental conservation, and healthy living. We can be found running in circles, biking to bakeries, skiing cross-country because it’s harder and camping in our silly roof top tent.
